Project 52 Week 23: Blue

Welcome to week 23 of our Professional Pet Photography Blog Circle!  What comes to mind first when you hear the word, “blue”?  The ocean?  A clear sky on a mid summer’s day?  Maybe sadness?  When this week’s topic was revealed the first thought that came to my mind was, “Blue” as in “Blue Amrich”, of course!

Have you heard of Blue?  She’s a extremely talented fellow professional pet photographer in my neck of the woods and she is currently enrolled in a Beyond Manners training class with her English Shepherd pup, Flint, that I teach on Wednesday evenings at the MSPCA ~  How fun is that?!

It was just recently when someone asked me “Darlene, if you were looking for a pet photographer to photograph you and your dog, who would you choose?”  We have an abundance of pet photographers in the MA area, but my response was immediate. “Blue Amrich, of Beyond the Fence of course”!  Her work is stunning.  It’s real.  It’s genuine.  It’s true.  She is passionate about what she does and has an enormous love for dogs!  She’s a lover of the outdoors.  She enjoys hiking with her pup.  And now that I have her and her amazing puppy in class, I see this bond she has with her dog, Flint, and it warms my heart.

I went out on a limb and asked Blue if she could “possibly maybe” come to class a little bit early this week – i’d LOVE to photograph her and Flint for this week’s blog post!  Guess what?  She said, YES!

I felt a little amount of pressure – haha!  This was the first time for me photographing another professional photographer!  Blue is an inspiration of mine.  I admire her work.  I remember several years ago when Kota and I did Nosework classes our instructor shared some images of her dog, Pippi, that Blue photographed.  They were a sunrise session on the beach and they were stunning!

Blue and Flint arrived early before our class on Wed.  There was quite a bit of greenery outside the training room.  It wasn’t the most ideal location but I did find an area that had some buttercups and daisies with long grass that hopefully would work nice!  The weather was strange… from clouds making the sky look like it was about to downpour, to bright sun that wasn’t cooperating.  We found some open shade areas and worked with the sun coming in and out around the buttercups.  I used 2 lenses – my Canon 24-70 mm and Canon 135 mm.

I adore these two!  Flint has so much energy and such a zest for life!  He loved grabbing sticks and running around.  Puppies!  Blue and Flint make a great team!  I”m so excited to share these images with you 🙂  This is the first time Blue is seeing them, and I hope she loves them as much as I do!  I had a difficult time narrowing these down for the post.  I usually share 3-5 images a post.  Let me know what you think!  They were both beautiful models!

At first Flint thought this week’s post was “Flint”, not “Blue” 🙂

They make a great team!!!

We had a wonderful afternoon!  I enjoyed getting to know Blue a bit more.  She is doing an outstanding job with Flint.  The class she is taking is their third one and he’s just about 8 months old.  She sent me a pic that night of Flint after class – he was wiped out after a busy day!

If you are looking for a professional pet photographer in the MA/NH area, you have two of the best right here!  You could never go wrong with me or Blue!  You might just have to choose us both 🙂

Take a wild guess who is up next in our blog circle?  You guessed it!  Blue Amrich of Beyond the Fence!  She can interpret this week’s topic any way she pleases!  I can’t wait to read her post!  Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

  1. Lovely; that pose at the end is perfect (can I borrow it? :). It’s so nice to work with a trained dogs (even if it is “basic manners”, it makes a difference!). Great job, those are all terrific images. Funny how our lives intersect; you’re a trainer and photographer (so am I, CPDT-KSA), Blue is a photographer that’s in your training class. It is indeed a small world.

    1. Thanks, Tracy! I knew I could ask Blue to lie down in the grass to get some shots… she was easy going! It does help when dogs have some manners – a sit/stay is a wonderful thing! That’s awesome you train, too! I am CATCH trainer certified 🙂 I enjoy teaching classes. Yes, small world it is!

    1. Thanks, Elaine! Some people might look at me crazy when I ask them if they’d lie down in the grass…. Blue didn’t mind one bit! That’s what I love!

  2. Great that you had a chance to photograph another professional photographer. Must have been nerve racking. You did a great job. The B&W are excellent and add a beautiful tone to the session. All the shots are excellent and have great composition.

    1. Thank you! It was a lot of fun! Yes, i little nervous as i uploaded them to the computer 🙂 Great models!

    1. Ok, here’s my much too long comment….

I was so excited when you asked me and Flint to model for you! And super nervous – it is nerve wracking to be on the other side of the camera. I was definitely a bit worried about my wild pup not holding still for any of the photos (now I know what my clients feel like. ha!)

I don’t think I can choose a favorite. They’re all amazing! Look at the grass on Flint’s tongue in that first photo – yup, that’s my boy. Of course, Flint does think he should be the center of attention at all times. And I can really see his personality in the next one with him showing off his sit. I LOVE “admiration,” “two peas in a pod,” and “kisses from mom.” You really captured our relationship! The ones with Flint sitting between my feet are really fun and I don’t mind the grass stains. That’s pretty normal for me! The black and white ones are really beautiful too.

Also, thank you, thank you for you kind words about my photography. Now I’m blushing. I’ve loved your work too! It’s so much fun to meet fellow pet photographers, especially since I feel like I’ve known you for years through this group.

      1. I’m so thrilled that you love them! Haha … I was the one nervous! And Flint is so well trained! He’s an amazing puppy! Aw these images show so much joy! Thank you again – this was so fun! If I had to pick favorites … “kisses from mom” (i adore!) and “admiration” – they were my top! And I love the last 3 lying in the grass. Who would know we were right next to parking lot and I was lying down on pavement to get those?? 🙂 Great to finally get to know one another – so true it feels like i’ve know you for years from blogging!

  3. Amazing images! Agree all of them are unique and special in their own way! Wish you could photograph yourself with Kota 🙂 Luv these – nice work with a great looking team!

    1. Thank you so much, Pete! Always appreciate your thoughtful, kind and supportive words!!! Aren’t they a great team?!

  4. How awesome is that! Great that you got to get together, and the images are gorgeous! Flint is delightful, and I particularly like the black and white ones…..but I love them all. Great job!

    1. Thanks, Lynda! It was a fun afternoon! Flint is an amazing little puppy – such a smarty pants!!! Blue and Flint do make a wonderful team!

  5. Wow, what a lovely set of photos of Flint and Blue. I am sure she will love them all and thank you for taking them. I love all the different poses you did with them and the difference expressions on Flint’s face!
