Project 52 Week 38: “Eyes”

“He speaketh not; and yet there lies a conversation in his eyes.”  These great words are those of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  I found this quote to be perfectly fitting for this week’s Professional Pet Photography Project’s Blog Circle of “Eyes” and directly relating to the eyes of adoptable dogs.

Once a week I photograph adoptable dogs at the MSPCA Nevin’s Farm in Methuen, MA.  I find it emotional.  Sometimes I take a photo and fortunately that pooch goes home within a few days.  Sometimes I take a series of images throughout different seasons and it takes a bit more time for the dog to be noticed and find their “soulmate”.  One thing that all of these dogs have are soulful eyes full of stories from their past.  If they could only communicate these stories to us in words.

I’d like to share a few of this week’s images from the shelter.

First is sweet, friendly “Coco”.  She is nine years old, and as you can see, her muzzle is starting to gray.  If only these eyes could talk….

And then there are the “seniors”.  These dogs always seem to tug at my heart strings.  Meet lovely “Marrietta”.  She is 10 years old and I’m in love!

And then there are the younger pups, who just didn’t get off to the right start and are hoping to find a forever home that they can grow in and enjoy!  Lola is 11 months old – how about those puppy eyes AND that little head tilt?  She is looking for an active lifestyle – camping or hiking would be awesome!  She is fun loving and sweet!

  1. I love that quote & the sweet grey faces! The eyes are my favorite thing about a dog image and you’ve captured these 3 perfectly! I hope they find their people soon.

  2. Lovely images – I am glad to see that someone else takes photographs of dogs in need of a home. I volunteer for a local rescue, your photos are giving me some great ideas!!!

  3. I also have a fondness for older dogs. They are not so easy to photograph, as their eyes can be cloudy, but their expressions are true. Thank you for helping the animals with fantastic photographs!

  4. I agree on the emotional impact these animals can cause. When I did my first shelter orientation, we did a group walk though and I about lost it seeing all these poor babies looking up at me with hopeful eyes that I’d be taking them home. It broke my heart! Since then I am better as I now look at it as being able to help them find their forever home, even if it’s norm with me. Rescue dogs are truly amazing and you’ve done a wonderful thing in capturing such beautiful images.
