Project 52 Week 6: “LOVE”

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – perfect timing for this week’s 52 Week Pet Photography Project’s Blog Circle post!  I’m looking forward to each Pet Photographer’s take on this week’s  topic, “love”.

When my phone rang recently from a friend I hadn’t talked to in a few years, I was thrilled!  She is that kind of friend where you can pick up exactly where you left off and no time or distance is between.  She was looking for the perfect gift for her daughter’s boyfriend and she thought a photo of his 12 year old Husky would be perfect!  I couldn’t agree more!

“Kelsey and I can head up your way”.  (Kelsey is my friend Keri’s daughter)

“I”d actually love to come south and meet you on the Cape!”

If you are from my area, you are “north” or “south” of Boston.  It’s never easy to venture the other way!  Why?  Traffic can be non stop no matter what the hour!

I headed down to Cotuit, MA around noon on a Friday after my scheduled dog walks and it was about a 2 hour drive.  We got to Crocker Neck Reservation  around 2:30 in the afternoon and it was a nice, overcast day.  This was my first time meeting Kayser, the Siberian Husky.  He was a handsome boy for sure!  He does do “off leash” sometimes (brave for a husky owner as I know!) but since his prey drive is on the “intense” side, we decided to keep him on a 12 foot lead. (my favorite lead length for photographing outdoors!)

This boy was amazing!  Twelve?  He hiked and we climbed and he did awesome!  We  had the whole conservation area to ourselves that day – it was perfect!  Even though the photo was going to be for dad, I just had to sneak in and snap a few of Kelsey and Kayser together.  They had a clear connection.   One of my favorite quotes came to mind while looking through the photos of these two:

“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend never owned a dog”.

For this week’s theme of “love” I thought it would be perfectly fitting to share these photos of the bond between Kelsey and Kayser.

The last one is my favorite!  If you notice I didn’t do any leash edits, nor did I pay more attention with trying to hide the leashes.  When photographing a “bond” between dog and owner, I feel the leash adds to that “connection” and try to take the photo as candid and not posed as possible 🙂  I wanted these to be very “natural” looking.

  1. While I agree with everyone that the last is a wonderful photo, I liked “Paw”. I just get a thrill when pets do something so spur of the moment, that can touch the soul, and I am there to take the picture, ’cause it’s most likely never going to repeat again.

    1. Thanks, Kathie! I do love those “spur of the moment” actions, too! I agree! You really can’t go wrong with those captures 🙂
