Project 52 Week 8: Silhouette

Welcome to Week 8 of our 52 Week Professional Pet Photography Blog Circle.  This week’s topic is “Silhouette”.

What is a silhouette?  A silhouette is the “image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, with its edges matching the outline of the subject. The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the whole is typically presented on a light background, usually white, or none at all”

I wasn’t sure if I’d get a chance to tackle this week’s topic.  Two week’s ago I used some silhouette images from a past session for the topic of “Fantasy”, so I wanted to be able to shoot something “new”.

A sunrise silhouette was out of the question this week.  I do get up early for photos, but battling a slight cold I needed all the sleep I could get! Living in the woods makes this topic a bit of a challenging one, as it’s best to have a nice open space to shoot.

My take on this topic is a different one.  As I was sitting on the couch brainstorming, I saw the light from outside shining in through the window shades.   I loved how the outlines of the birds looked – like a “silhouette”.  The burlap shades in the house are my favorite thanks to a good friend of mine who has a great eye for fabric and design!  I decided I would put Kota in front of the shades and create a silhouette.

Positioning a dog in front of a window when you don’t want them to look out is not easy – haha!  I didn’t have a “helper” either!  Kota had no idea why i wanted her to stand on the couch and look at nothing 🙂  I also got a silhouette of the little fox we have that sits in the window.

In order to expose for the silhouette image, I exposed for the background.  After, I darkened the blacks.  They were both taken with my 24-70mm lens.  Another tip with these types of images is to get down low and shoot upward.  I didn’t have the sky, but I still got down lower and in position to get the shape of Kota’s head and that ear.

  1. Such a fun idea. I had my two silhouetted in front of the back glass door before we finally got one night that had some color. Love the addition of the little fox.

  2. Great idea! Well done Kota too! Aren’t they gorgeousnthe way they do what you ask even though you can feel them thinking….are you sure?? Lovely idea for this weeks topic.
