Project 52 Week 8: “Texture”

Welcome to Week 8 of our 52 Week Pet Photograph Project Blog Circle.  This week’s topic is “texture”.

Texture is defined as:  the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance

My interpretation of this week’s topic will be finding “texture” on Kota, my always patient and cooperative model.

I pulled out my Bryan Peterson book, “Learning to See Creatively” to see what he had to say about texture.  Bryan states that, “the challenge in seeing, as well as conveying, texture depends on one critical element: lighting.  A compelling image of texture – unlike line, shape, pattern, or color – is dependent on low-angled sidelight.  So, it’s imperative that you search for texture on sunny days in the early morning or late afternoon hours.”  Great to know!

I had just received a Canon 100mm macro lens from my dad.  He recently made the switch from Canon to Nikon… so I finagled a deal on a new lens for myself!  🙂  It came just in time to try it our for this assignment!  Lets see how I can get texture from Kota’s nose and maybe her fur.

The first image I focused on the texture of Kota’s nose.  Yes, I’ve blogged about her “winter nose” before!  I am a bit obsessed 🙂  This time I tried out the macro lens to get as much detail as possible.  Love the little bumps and ridges.

Next I tried to get the texture of Kota’s ear.  She has one ear that “flops”.  We call it her “broken” ear 🙂

The next image is after our walk in the muddy, slushy, melting snow!  As i write, it is 58 degrees outside.  This is after a week of 2 snowstorms and over 2 feet of snow on the ground!  We’re not ready for winter to end!  After our morning walks, Kota loves to lay on our deck and look out through the railing with her paws hanging over before she comes inside for breakfast.  Here is a picture of her dirty paws and the detail of her fur after our walk!

The last image shows the texture of Kota’t tail… and how I need to give it a good brushing at the moment!  🙂  As you can see, it’s an ugly, mucky time of year when the snow it melting!

  1. I love the little details you’ve captured! Again, without seeing the full-bodied Kota, I would’ve sworn this was my husky/lab mix. From the snow nose to the dirty paw and particularly that tail, you beautifully captured all my favorite things of my own dog in yours–and that makes me smile.

    1. Thanks, Jessica! They do have very similar features! And we just got a DNA test back… she does have 13.5 % Lab in her 🙂

    1. Thanks, Linda! And I always love the “pinkish” in her nose during the winter season 🙂 The low angled side light was helpful for me!

    1. Thanks, Jodie! The macro is much different than what I’m used to … but it will be fun to work with and learn new things!

  2. You are talking to a dog nose lover here, and that photo speaks to me. 73 degrees today in February in Pennsylvania. U.N.H.E.A.R.D. O.F. I have a feeling you are going to get a lot of mileage out of that macro!

    1. Love it! Yes, nose shots are the best! Excited to work more with the macro… so much to learn! Gives me something to look forward to this spring with flowers and colors 🙂
