Photographing Dogs at Play

I’m back for week 17 of our 52 Week Pet Photography Blog Circle! This week’s topic is “Play Time” and I’m sharing a few images from my most recent Spring Pet Photo Sessions of some adorable pups having fun!

When it comes to photographing pets, I do consider myself more of a “portrait” photographer. I love outdoor, natural light sessions in a dog’s favorite place – whether it be a park or trail – but I tend to set up the shot. I will pose a dog on a tree stump or in a flower bed. I will have them sit in front of a pond, or place paws on a rock. I take in the entire scene and make placement of the dog. Bonus points if the dog has a stellar “sit-stay”, but I promise you that is not necessary at all! I see dogs with all types of manners. I also admit to loving a good challenge!

After all of that posing, it’s a nice thing to reward the dog with some PLAY! Maybe it’s running through an open field, or rolling in the grass. Does your dog have a special “trick” he can do? We can always add some fun into the session!

Here is a recent photos session with adorable Bella. This was such a wonderful day as I met Bella just over two years ago when she was up for adoption at the MSPCA Nevin’s Farm in Methuen, MA. I did her holiday photo and she was the sweetest! It was so nice to see her and meet her wonderful family. We met at one of my favorite locations, Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA.

We had a fun afternoon with Bella! She did lots of posing and even changed outfits here and there! Toward the end of our session we attached the longline and let her RUN! Check out those ears and see how much fun she was having! I do like to keep the dogs on long lines for safety, so even if your dog might not be the best off leash, we can still capture your pup running. Removing the leash is a simple photoshop edit.

Those ears!!!

Next up was a recent “Memory Session” for this beautiful boy, Henry. I met with mom and dad and his sibling, Abel, at Lynch Park in Beverly MA. It was my first time there and I arrived early to catch the sunrise along coast. Henry had so much energy! He had an amazing day! We ended the session with him showing off his adorable “dancing”. Isn’t he the cutest?
