Project 52 Week 1: “New”

Happy 2017!  I’m so excited for a New Year and welcome to Week #1 in our 52 Week Pet Photography Project’s Blog circle!  Our first topic is “new” and we are up for our own interpretation – I’m thinking there will be a nice variety of fun posts this week!

For me I decided to share my first day of 2017, the “New” Year, with all of you!

January 1st 2107, 8:05 AM – not bad for me and Kota!  My husband is an early bird and even this  morning slept in until “6:30″… not me! I’m fortunate Kota sleeps until I get out of bed.  That ritual hasn’t changed!  I brewed a large pot of Peet’s coffee and my husband made an awesome breakfast:  Omelettes with peppers, onions, sausage, chipotle cheddar cheese with a side of toast 🙂  What a great way to start off the New Year (who doesn’t love to be spoiled?)!

After breakfast we headed out on the trails behind our house.  I brought my camera with just the 135mm lens attached – my favorite!  It was a bit on the icy side and not much snow left.  Ok, I admit, there hasn’t been much snow at all to begin with.  Kota still had an amazing time!   I’d like to share a few of my favorite’s from our New Year’s Day morning hike!

Kota is definitely a challenge to photograph when we are out on a hike.  All the scents in the environment are such a distraction!  She isn’t the most “food motivated” dog, so even filet mignon won’t get her attention when we are out in the woods!  But every walk when we get to about 200 yards from the back of the house she stops and looks at my husband as if to say, “ok, now I’m ready for that treat!”

  1. You are lucky Kota lets you sleep in! Seven years later and Hunter still wakes me between 4:00-4:30 a.m. every single day. Sleeping in for us is 6:00 a.m. Thanksfully I’m an early bird–but even this early bird doesn’t want to get up when it’s still dark outside!

You are so lucky to have such lovely trails behind your house to explore. Kota’s coloring looks amazing among the trees!

    1. 4:00 AM! Wow – I couldn’t have that – haha! We even had our foster puppy this fall on my late sleeping schedule! We do love the trails and it’s so convenient. Kota is not “dog friendly” and it’s nice and quiet. I’d love to venture further out with her, but she’s not easy! Thank you, Jessica!!!

  2. There’s no such thing a sleep in in my house either! Sapphire is always awake before sunrise. Darlene you live in such a beautiful part of the world! I did a shoot with a Husky last night- must be a Husky thing? leading with the sniffer and not being treat motivated? Gorgeous photos of her 🙂

    1. Before sunrise?! Oh, no!!! Haha! Yes, huskies can be “particular”. In the summer Kota can go a few days without eating – just the way she is so i don’t worry! And yes, if they are “scent” driven, nothing else in the world matters 🙂 Thanks, Rochelle!

  3. Good times! Such a treat to have a dog like Kota, and Dar who captures such memorable photographs! Kota is looking forward to some snow on the way for tomorrow – so are we – the snowshoes may be appearing… Finally

    1. Thanks, Elaine! I love her “broken” ear… shows character! Yes, “sleeping in” definitely involves a bit of training … but so worth it!!!

  4. What a best start to a New Year! Before I moved back to FL, I lived in MA and I use to volunteer at the MSPCA also. I trained Nose Work with my dogs at the MSPCA with Carolyn. Small world! I loved to live in Danvers, but military is moving us around pretty often. Your pup is adorable and I miss the snow, so happy to see some in your photos. Fun day!

    1. Aw thank you! Yes, small world! I teach Basic Manners classes at the MSPCA, too, and Kota and I did nose work for aver a year with Carolyn 🙂 Lol just took off the winter right now – i needed another night off during the week! I bet you are loving FL… I think i would miss the snow a little – i never was a snow person until I got a northern breed – she has taught me to love the winter! Happy New Year!!! Your work is stunning!
