Project 52 Week 36: “Details”

Welcome to week 36 of our Pet Photography Project’s Blog Circle.  This week’s topic is “details”.

This was perfect timing to get out the 100mm macro lens for some practice in getting “details”.  My husband, Pete, happened to bring home some fresh flowers … more good timing!  Kota modeling with a pink and white carnation is a great idea.  Had some fun with this!  We started by using the “touch” cue (nose to flower) but she was coming in very fast toward the flower and i wasn’t getting the “look” i was looking for.  I had Pete place the flower in front of her nose and use a “look” cue to get eye contact from Kota.  My goal was to get the details in Kota’s nose and whiskers and detail in the flower petals.  These were all taken at f/5.6 (had to learn with macro – not my usual 2.0-2.8)  with an ISO of 1000.  It was early evening.  The first and the 3rd images were front lighting and the middle image was backlighting with the sun lowering behind some lighter trees in the distance.  Here are the results:

  1. I just love that second photo. (I love all of them, but the yellow background of the second one really calls to me.) Beautiful work and great idea!
