Project 52 Week 39: “Texture”

What is texture? Texture is defined as: the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.  Texture is this week’s topic of our Professional Pet Photography Blog Circle.

In amazing photographer Bryan Peterson’s Book, Learning To See Creatively, he states that “A compelling image of texture – unlike line, shape, pattern, or color – is dependent on low-angled sidelight.”  He says that it’s “imperative that you search for texture on sunny days in the early morning or late afternoon hours”.

My first images were taken on a cloudy day at a dog daycare, “Ruff n’ Tumble“.  I would have loved to work with a “macro” lens on these images, but I was photographing a large group of dogs in a pen area so  changing lenses throughout the afternoon would not have been a simple task!  I believe there were 28 puppies and dogs – i had my work cut out for me!

I was able to get  a few “snout” captures with my 24-70 mm lens.  I LOVE the texture in a dog’s nose!  From the roughness to the little nubbies.  Here are my favorite snouts from the afternoon 🙂

The first image is of a puppy that had been rolling in mud and playing in buckets of water all afternoon!   WE had a few downpours so the dogs weren’t looking there “groomed” best!  Along with the texture of the nose, you will notice that drenched, curly fur!

The next image is another puppy – a Chocolate Lab.  I love the texture of the fur around her little nose.

The third image is a mixed breed – i love the golden color of the fur and the dark nose with the little bumps and whiskers.

  1. Eeeeek I love your puppy nose photos and I wish I’d been there with you. All those dogs = heaven (but I’ll bet you could’ve used the help too! 🙂 ) I love this bit of information: “A compelling image of texture – unlike line, shape, pattern, or color – is dependent on low-angled sidelight.” I literally was thinking about how to take decent photos of Willow’s fur and I googled it but didn’t find anything that really helped. This helps so thank you very much!

    1. Aren’t noses so much fun?! Especially puppies!!! Definitely needed a helper… not an easy task! I love Bryan Peterson’s Books – Understanding Exposer and Learning to See Creatively – i go back to them quite a bit for resources! Glad the tips was helpful!
