Golden Hour in Rockport, MA

August 24, 2018 By Darlene Woodward 12 Comments

Welcome to week 34 of our Pet Photography Blog Circle!  This week we are outdoors in “Golden Hour”  – my favorite time of day to schedule a photo session!

What is golden hour?  It’s the time frame about and hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset with the most magical light!  I admit to not being a morning person, but i WILL wake up early to schedule a photo session to get this soft, beautiful, “golden” light.  The middle of the day  produces a much harsher, white light.

This past week I had a photo session scheduled in one of my favorite New England towns, Rockport, MA.  It’s about an hour drive from where I live now, but years ago when I was slightly closer I’d have some wonderful beach days there on my own.  I’d head up early on a weekday and have a little beach to myself called Short Beach.

This session was with adorable Rudy and his mom.  They live walking distance from Halibut Point State Park – perfect!  We planned to meet up around 5:45 pm – sunset that evening was at 7:40 pm .  This would allow us to get some shots during the “golden hour” and even some sunset images.  It was a humid day – nothing new for this summer!   But we did get some amazing light and some gorgeous colors at sunset.

Here are a few of my favorites from sweet Rudy’s photo session.  When looking at the time the images were taken, Lightroom showed all three are between 6:32 and 6:40 pm – yes, that makes it “golden hour” with the perfect light!

It was such a treat to be in Rockport!  This was my second photo session here, the first was at the Headlands and that was during the sunrise.  Either time of day, one can’t go wrong!  I hope to do many more photo sessions here in the near future!

Next up in our Professional Pet Photographer’s Blog Circle is BARKography by Kim Hollis on location in British Columbia!  Click on the link at the end of each post and follow along.  I can’t wait to see Kim’s images – she spent some time recently in a beautiful location!  Enjoy your weekend!

Oh those colors! Almost makes me wish I were back in New England, but I’ll get over as soon as I read about your first snow storm! LOL Fantastic images!
