Fall is just around the corner! It will be here before we know it. Is this the year that you are planning to do a photo shoot with your dog? Are you already thinking about what to wear?
I offer a planning call with my clients prior to our session and I am here to help you with 5 great tips!

1. Embrace the layers
We live in New England. There is nothing “predictable” about our weather! You know the days… 40 degrees at night and 80 in the afternoon? It’s not uncommon!
I do photo sessions just after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset. Mornings can start chilly as we might be starting with more layers. In the evenings, adding the layers.
Sweaters, cardigans and vests are great! I love the look of a vest with a solid color fitted shirt underneath. Scarves add a nice accent and pop of color to a jacket or vest.

2. Jewel and earth tones are a perfect palette
I am a huge fan of jewel and earth tones, not only for fall, but year round they work well. Think forest greens, warm browns, rust orange, mustard, burgundy, and cream. These tones look amazing against fall foliage and let your pup be remain the center of attention.
Try to avoid bright colors – save your fluorescent orange and yellow for walking your dog at night or during hunting season.

3. Boots ARE the best!
Boots! They are stylish AND practical! If we plan to do more hiking, choose a pair this is more comfortable. If we have an early session in the vineyard, sometimes the ground is damp. Choose a waterproof or water resistant pair. I have clients bring several pairs to switch into, also – that’s always an option!
A photo of your dog in between your super cute boots? That’s one of my favorite images to capture!

4. If choosing patterns, keep them simple
Are you a fan of plaid in the fall? That’s perfect! I love that cozy look, too!
Texture or tiny florals? That will work, too!
Please avoid supersized logos, busy patterns. These might class with our environment. This can also draw attention away from the focus of your pooch.

5. What about your dog’s accessories?
Don’t forget your pup! I am all about “simple”. Choose a neutral or solid color collar with a matching leash.
Bandanas can add a nice touch. Keep their pattern simple, too. A nice small plaid works well.
Do you plan to where a plaid button down? Maybe it has a cranberry hue. Choose a cranberry colored bandana to compliment your shirt.
I your pup a little nugget that gets a chill? If they don’t mind wearing clothes, a sweater can be adorable and add the perfect finishing touch.

I hope these few tips take the guesswork out of planning what to wear for your fall photo session!
The most important thing? Please wear what makes YOU feel comfortable — your dog will take care of the rest and run the show.
