Welcome to week 41 of our Professional Pet Photography Blog Circle! This week’s topic is: High Contrast
A high contrasting photo contains strong “contrasting” elements. There is a strong “difference”. In a black and white image there will be strong blacks and whites and few gray tones. In an image with color, rainy days will result in lower contrast, while sunny, bright days result in higher contrast.
I decided to share a black and white image, and a color image this week to show contrast both ways. In this black and white image, the histogram displayed a dip in the middle.
For the color image I would have loved to have shown a nice contrast in reds and oranges with autumn colors. This week, we only went from green to yellow. We are still waiting on the season change! This was taken with my 24-70 mm lens at f2.8. I increased the contrast slider to the right in lightroom to get the intense yellows of the trees.
Short post this week as were are hopping in the car now and heading to Lake Placid, NY for a few days of vacation! We were looking forward to cooler weather until I just checked their updated forecast and see that it’s supposed to be in the 70’s this weekend – ugh!!! We will make the best of it!!!
Next up in our blog circle is SamAdele Pet&Equine Photography covering the Lancaster and Morecambe areas. Click on the link at the end of each post to see some amazing images from professional pet photographers around the world! Have a great weekend!!!
Those ears!! The high contrast definitely shows up more in bw!
Thanks, Kim! The more and more I try the black and white with these posts, the more I’m loving it!
Love the black and white photo. It really shows off ears, eyes, nose! It seems Fall here is non-existent in color. We’ve gone from green to brown to no leaves on trees. Have a great vacation!
Thanks, Elaine! We had a wonderful vacation – such a challenge getting back to “reality” haha!
Ooh I’m not sure which I prefer here! Both are excellent ways to show contrast 🙂 well done!
Thank you so much!
I really like the black and white because Kota just pops! The color is nice too, but the contrast is much clearer in the first image.
Thanks, Jessica! I’m starting to love black and white more and more!
I love the colour version!!!. Kota always looks so magestic in your images!
Thanks so much, Rochelle!
The yellow in the colored picture looks great but black & white rules!
Thanks! I think i like the B&W, too!
Nice pics of Kota, just getting to these after a nice weekend in Lake Placid.. Different ballgame when it came to colors on the trees up there. Some more great images to come from Darlene!!
Thanks, Pete! Can’t wait to share some from our trip!!! Woohoo!
Nice photos! I talk about this in my latest post, but a big thing about high contrast photography that’s hard to get right is that perfect amount of contrast between whites/blacks in the photo: https://brandonlazovic.com/high-contrast-photography
