6 Reasons To Love Winter Dog Photo Sessions in MA

Winter is my favorite season. Yes, it is. I said it! It is my favorite season for dog photo sessions, too.

Do you think I’m out of my mind? To tell you the truth, I didn’t love winter for years … until I loved my first snow dog. When you have a northern breed you will learn to love this time of year! (or please don’t get a snow dog!)

Four months after my husband and I bought our first home in Georgetown, MA, we rescued an adorable husky mix, Kota. If you are new to my posts, Kota was my everything. She was my soul dog. My once in a lifetime everything dog.

We had Kota for 11 years. Winters were the BEST with her! We snowshoed as much as possible. Even if there was only 4-5 inches on the ground we’d put on those snowshoes! Back then we did have more snow than these days haha!

Unfortunately, Kota is not with us, but our little angel husky nugget that we rescued in December of 2022, Halo, continues to bring us the joy and of course, the love of everything winter!

But why do I love doing winter photo sessions and want to do them all season with your dogs?

Here are my top 6 reasons why I love it so much!

1. A snow backdrop is magical

The last few years have been a little bit lacking in the snow department. But WHEN that snow covers the branches it turns any landscape into a magical winter wonderland – even in your drab backyard, I promise!

This is my backyard. We do have conservation land and acres of woods behind us, but the yard itself is not pretty at all! And Halo digs up the dirt when she does her zoomies. Who needs nice grass?

2. Winter golden light is perfect for photos

There is something also magical about the light in winter. Snow or no snow, that golden color popping through the trees is stunning.

Clouds are great, too!

Feta’s portrait session was on a cloudy day – nice and soft light.

3. The beaches are quiet and peaceful

Winter is my favorite season for the beach! Why? It’s quiet!

Yes, there are a few people who brave the cold with their pups for a sunrise beach stroll, but on the most part, it’s very peaceful.

My husband and I enjoy taking Halo to Wallis Sands in Rye, NH, to catch the sunrise. It’s always worth having the camera with me. (And we like to head to Lil’s Cafe in Kittery, Maine, for breakfast afterwards!)

4. Coats, hats, and boots …. so fun!

I LOVE winter clothes! Cute boots and lots of layers. Cozy sweaters and fun scarves with pops of color. It’s such a great season for style! You can even dress your pooch in an adorable coat! (I prefer naked, but it’s cute on the littles)

5. Dogs running in snow is pure joy

Dogs running in snow might be my absolute favorite images to take! We can do this right in your backyard, which makes it even better for your pup to be comfortable at home AND off leash.

Rama, below, doesn’t love too many other dogs and prefers quieter environments. He and his mom actually came to my backyard and we had a great photo session where he could run around off leash and enjoy the fenced in yard.

6 Winter palettes look beautiful framed

The brown tones alone look beautiful on the walls in many homes. Winter is bright and airy. Add some snow and you have the neutrals AND you still have so much versatile beauty. It’s a great season for wall art!

Do you love the idea of a winter portrait session?

I hope this has inspired you to book a winter portrait session with your dog today! It’s only January. I’m sure we have a lot of winter still to go!

Enjoy the SNOW!!!

  1. Stunning Photos that go along with your 6 reasons why you like winter. Winter snow always makes a great backdrop for beautiful photos.

    1. Thank you so much! I know you don’t miss the “shoveling” of it! It is nice to have some snow days in winter for sure.

  2. It’s so fun to see dogs having a blast in the snow and snow does make everything look so beautiful. I kind of wish we had one snow day a year here – maybe two. But, since that’s not going to happen, I’ll have to drool over your snow images instead.

    1. Haha! I definitely love some snow days! With the way these weather patterns are going… who knows? You may someday see some snow!
